AACN Outstanding Chapter Educational Program Award
Greater Portland Chapter, Portland, OR

The Greater Portland Chapter (GPC-AACN) is committed to offering quality educational programs to our members. Annually, we sponsor a CCRN and PCCN review course, an Advanced Preceptor Workshop, four Basic Critical Care courses and a Critical Care Symposium. Along with the evaluations from previous events, we utilize our diverse board and committee members to gather suggestions from their peers to help us plan future educational offerings.

The planning and implementation of each event is handled by the education symposium or Critical Care Consortium Committee (CCCC). The CCCC is comprised of clinical nurse specialists and educators from area hospitals who provide a comprehensive introductory course to new nurses in critical care. Recognizing that preceptors are an integral part of a successful orientation, the CCCC has organized an Advanced Preceptor Workshop with the goal to further develop preceptors to better communicate and meet the needs of preceptees.

GPC-AACN is fortunate to sponsor its annual symposium as a collaboration with the Oregon Society of Critical Care Medicine (OSCCM). Planning the next year's symposium starts immediately after completion of the current, using the SCCM and AACN platforms as the foundation. We have grown to 450 attendees. As a supporter of certification, GPC-AACN's education committee organizes review courses at our cost to members. Since progressive care nurses have not been very active in our group we personally invited the progressive care educators from area hospitals to join in the planning.

The Greater Portland Chapter is committed to offering affordable quality education to its members. Through our innovative leadership we have sought new means of sponsorship and support from area hospitals and vendors with great success. We will continue to promote AACN's mission and values and serve our membership.
