AACN is comprised of over 73,000 acute and critical-care nurses committed to providing the highest quality care to their patients and the patients' families. Volunteerism is a vital component of AACN's success. Last year alone, over 900 volunteers served the organization and through their contributions moved the organization closer to its vision and strategic goals.

Did you know that volunteers contributed to the following outcomes this past year?

The launch of unlimited free online and journal-based CE for all members. This would not have been possible without the numerous volunteers who review CE articles and write the CE tests.

Last year AACN awarded over 120 Circle of Excellence Awards and Educational Advancement Scholarships. More than 100 volunteers gave of their time to review the nominations and score the submissions.

AACN continues its work to develop and publish Practice Alerts to help nurses and other health care practitioners carry their bold voices to the bedside to directly impact patient care. The Evidence-based Practice Resource Work Group identifies, authors and develops resources for the implementation of the practice alerts.

More than 120 units have received the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence. A dedicated group of volunteers is responsible for reviewing, scoring and developing the comprehensive feedback that is provided to each Beacon applicant. This group continues to grow as the number of applications increases and with both the progressive care and pediatric applications now available.

We launched the Essentials of Nurse Manager Orientation and ECCO 2.0, while also developing two new e-learning resources. Numerous volunteers have been tapped for their clinical expertise to develop and review content and to write test items.

NTI and the Advanced Practice Institute rely on the dedicated volunteers who serve on these two work groups to review the nearly 1,500 session abstracts that are submitted, and from those develop the well-balanced, comprehensive educational program that you experience each year at NTI. Thanks to their work, NTI had a record-breaking year with over 9,300 participants.

HOW THE VOLUNTEER PROFILES ARE USED TO SELECT AND APPOINT VOLUNTEERS

The AACN Volunteer Profile Database is a mechanism that the Association uses to allow for the appointment of "just in time" volunteer groups. This not only allows for the emerging needs of the Association to be met by also allows you to assess if the time is right in your life to accept the opportunity. Once you have completed your profile, your profile will be queried each time a group is called to see if you meet the qualifications for that group. If you do, you will receive an e-mail with details about the work and timeline for the group so that you can determine if you would like to be considered for that specific opportunity. If you are interested, simply respond and submit any supplemental information that may be requested. You'll be notified a few weeks later as to whether you have been selected for the group. Whether you are selected or not, your name will remain in the database until you indicate you are no longer available or interested in volunteer opportunities.
